How To Defend The Infamous Caio Terra/De La Riva Ankle Lock

This is a technique that Caio Terra has been using over the years. He sets up this foot lock from De La Riva guard. Caio plays it in both Gi and No Gi, and has set it up on several opponents including Max Carvalho, Bruno Malfacine, Fabbio Passios, Daniel Tavares, and Henrique Rezende. Once the legs are set and the grip is on the ankle, remember to roll to the outer side. The torque on the ankle is really strong and creates a huge amount of pressure on the joint.

In this video,BJJ black belts Rory van Vliet & his instructor Rob Biernacki show the defense for the Caio Terra/De La Riva ankle lock. Rob Biernacki learned this move from his instructor Caio Terra, and has refined his technique over the years. People usually suck at this move, so it is easy to develop a false positive in thinking your defense is really good, when in reality your opponent/training partner just isn’t effective with the submission.

If you want to be un-submitable, you need to check out Tom DeBlass’ “Submission Escapes” BJJ 3 volume BJJ instructional from BJJFanatics.com . In this series, he shares multiple escapes from all of the hardest to escape positions. Soon your training partners and opponents will be calling you Houdini.
