Garry Tonon: Protesting the IBJJF Wouldn’t Be Harmful or Disrespectful

Yesterday there was an interesting movement brewing in the bjj community – a group banded together around the idea to protest the IBJJF by getting DQed for reaps. The whole thing started after Garry Tonon issued a call out to which a number of prominent black belts answered.

Although there are several misconceptions about the plan. Initially some took it as “Garry Tonon and a group will heel hook and or injure everyone” – a misconception Tonon was quick to debunk.

One other notable addition to the roster of those interested is UFC fighter Cub Swanson who also threw his hat in the IBJJF ring.

The controversy did not stop there so Tonon instagrammed an exchange:

However this type of protest has one serious flaw – it requires the competitors fork up 100$+ for event registration to the IBJJF  – a for profit organization.

Allowing reaping is still a serious issue – especially in light of things such as this:

In fact a variety of different promotions currently has rulesets that allow reaping and nobody is really complaining about it.

IBJJF remains mum on the subject even after one of the arguably weakest Nogi worlds lineups. Interestingly two junior members of the Danaher Death Squad did just fine there :
