Doctor & BJJ Black Belt On Why You Should Never Train Jiu-Jitsu in Times of Coronavirus

Being stuck at home during the time of the quarantine can be very boring and frustrating. Even if your BJJ academy is closed, doesn’t mean that you should meet your friends for private BJJ sessions.

Jiu-Jitsu Black belt and orthopedist of several top BJJ competitors, Dr. Gunter Sgarboza noticed that some athletes have been breaking the quarantine rules, going to the gym to train Jiu-Jitsu, something that can be very harmful to society.
He told Graciemag:

“I have already talked to several doctors about the case, including specialist doctors and professors, and the advice is to stop all training outside the home. Coronavirus is easily transmitted between people. A brief physical contact allows its propagation. Jiu-Jitsu is a sport of enormous contact between athletes, there is no way to put it into perspective. The transmission would be immediate. In fact, Jiu-Jitsu fighters tend to be health-conscious people. The tendency is that the symptoms of the disease will not appear. Many will be asymptomatic, especially the younger ones.

“But the point is that every fighter has family and friends, there are almost always elderly people in these groups, such as parents and grandparents, and also newborn children, or people known to treat serious illnesses, people who tend to suffer severe symptoms when they contract the virus. Let’s analyze, for example, the case of two athletes who break the rules and go to the gym to train. One is healthy and the other, although it does not show symptoms inherent to the coronavirus, carries the virus asymptomatically. That is, the athlete who did not have the virus will inevitably be infected. And when you return home, you can pass the disease on to a grandfather or child. And even if they don’t have the disease, athletes can be infected on the way to and from training in many situations.
