Based on the information from the video McDojo News, in an alarming incident at the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu of Olympia (BJJO), a former student, Andrew Clark, age 31, has been charged with second-degree arson and second-degree burglary following a destructive fire. The incident occurred on February 18th and resulted in significant damage to the martial arts gym.
According to the Olympia Police Department, surveillance footage and evidence at the scene pointed towards an intentional arson attack. The gym, a cornerstone of the local martial arts community, suffered extensive water and equipment damage due to the fire suppression efforts.
Clark, who was arrested and held at Thurston County Jail with a $2,000 bond, displayed concerning behaviors prior to the incident. His social media posts revealed a belief that he was being surveilled and targeted by federal agents. Notably, a cigar wrapper found at the crime scene was linked to purchases Clark made at a local store, bolstering the case against him.

The gym owner, Robert Owens, and other members had previously identified Clark as a potential threat due to his erratic behavior. Owens recounted an incident where Clark was found outside the gym with a gas can. The academy, recognized for its inclusive and diverse community, has been a haven for many, including veterans, first responders, parents, students, and children. This attack has not only damaged property but also profoundly impacted the emotional well-being of its members.
In response to this devastating event, the gym community rallied together to repair the damage. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to assist with the extensive costs, as the total damages were estimated in the six figures.
Owens, highlighting the gym’s commitment to public safety, mentioned their initiative to provide free training to law enforcement officers up to the blue belt level. This effort, especially relevant in the post-George Floyd era, aims to ensure responsible use of force and overall community safety.
