Demetrious Johnson: “Yeah I’m a Gi Guy. I Enjoy Gi Much More than No Gi”

Former UFC and current ONE champion Demetrious “The Mighty Mouse” Johnson displayed his Jiu-Jitsu skills yet again – this time at the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Pan American Championship!

He first won gold in his division, but then moved to the absolute…
Where he showed why he has his nickname.

Standing at 5 feet 3 inches and weighing approximately 155 pounds for the competition, Johnson faced off against a 6 feet 3 inches and 248 pounds heavy Michael Sante Medina in the quarterfinals.
And, well – Johnson won the match despite the size difference!

Medina had nothing but great words about Mighty Mouse:

He’s a beast, man.
Keeping that dude still is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. He’s rough.

Johnson eventually made it to the finals match, but lost to Brendan Paul Gagnon – via Triangle Choke.

Mighty Mouse gave me an interview afterwards, explaining how much he enjoys Gi, much more than No Gi:

“I’m a Gi guy yeah. My background is more No Gi though but in No Gi in my eyes it’s more about creating space and taking space. In No Gi, you don’t have to worry about the lapel or various guards or any of that. So with the Gi you have to worry about the lasso guard, the lapel, squid guard, worm guard. You have to have some form of curriculum and same thing with No Gi too. In Gi you have to get it right.”

“When I first started to go with Lucas Pinheiro, he put me in the worm guard and I was like, what the F is this. I’ve been training Grappling for 18 years and he did that to me and I had no idea what was going on…So I enjoy Gi more than No Gi. I enjoy the Gi point system. Yeah, I’m a Gi boy!”
