The entire bjj community rallied around Demian Maia’s title shot. Maia who was often mistreated by the promotion found himself in an unenviable position after a very short fight camp. The match ended up being 5 rounds of Maia attempting to take down Woodley and Woodley often grabbing the fence or being passive to counter.
“You ask fans if they want to see Woodley fight again. I think that would be flat out no. Who wants to pay to see Tyron Woodley fight again?” White said. “He is an absolute physical specimen. The guy could have finished that fight at any time he wanted to, but he didn’t want to take the risks.
“You take no risks, you get no rewards.”
Dana White on Woodley-Maia: “They broke record for least punches ever thrown in title fight. There’s not much to be pleased w/or talk about”

As for Maia, he thanked his fans:
Thanks for all your support. I did my best under the circumstances we had, and kept pushing the fight the best I could until the end.
Congratulations to Woodley for the win, he is the champion deservedly so. My journey continues, and I keep on going very proud of my path, and proud to represent my country and the nation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Sloth Jiu-Jitsu: you can be slow and unathletic and still kick butt in Jiu-Jitsu.
