Eddie Bravo tried several times to integrate this particular ruleset. The first time he tried it several years ago he hasn’t managed to gain much of an audience. However since he’s been quite successful in setting up the must watch Submission only tournament Eddie Bravo Invitational.
It was there that he opted to give his vision another platform and gotten much of the media attention for it. Back then he explained:
“Now those 3 special matches are gonna be a 4 men combat jiu-jitsu tournament. I had this cleared through the commission years and years ago but it kinda got stalled some of the rules. They wouldn’t let me .. They didn’t want to do it outside a cage. And they didn’t want to give me more than 3x 3 minute rounds. EBI was always about having combat jiu jitsu. Jiu Jitsu with some palm strikes”
We first heard rumblings Garry Tonon would be involved earlier in the month:
It’s confirmed I’m doing combat JJ at @EBIJJOFFICIAL, I promise 0 Submissions and all tko’s via slaps.
