Copa Podio Revelation Victor Honorio on IBJJF Worlds, His Wrestling Base & GFTeam

Brown belt under GFTeam’s Julio Cesar, Victor Honorio was the breakout star at last weekend’s Copa Podio Heavyweight GP. Honorio fought on the same level and even better than monsters such as Delson “Pe de Chumbo”, Erberth Santos and Felipe Preguica. The GFTeam memeber only lost one match: to Preguica who ended up winning the GP.

In an interview with TATAME, Victor commented on his performance in the championship, analyzed his loss to Felipe Preguica in GP final, and his win against Preguica in the fifth round, and revealed the desire to fight more times in Copa Podio.

“For the competition, I changed the diet more because I went from 111 kg to 96 kg. The guys at GFTeam helped me a lot during training. All fights I had were very hard. The event was very good. I can not complain about my performance during the championship. I had a good campaign, unfortunately I lost to Preguica at the end of the fight, when he passed my guard and he took the back. But I fought well, going forward, and I want to compete more times in the Copa Podio. ”

About his hard matches:

“I knew that Pe de Chumbo was a tough guy, but he surprised me. He did not tire, and it was not only against me, it was in all of his fights.  It was a tough fight. And against Preguica, you can not make mistakes, can not stop. I tried to make my game against him … The first time it worked in the second was working too, I was trying to pass guard. But the guy is a black belt world champion, and you can not make mistakes against these guys. I took a break, the guy took my back and ended the fight. I hope to fight him again, “

“For the World IBJJF, I’ll follow my training. The only thing that will change is the training time, that there are eight minutes, then I should change a little my physical preparation. I intend to continue making adjustments. In the standing I went back to basics, back to train Wrestling, since I was the Brazilian national wrestling team.
