2015 IBJJF Rules: Clarification on Use of Sports Bra / Rashguard for Women

2015 IBJJF Rules: Clarification on Use of Sports Bra / Rashguard for Women

On March 30th, 2015, IBJJF will begin to enforce our new Rule Book (v4.0)

UNIFORMS RULES UPDATES Page 30 Rule revision: 8.1.3 –

New point: 8.1.4

In the female divisions, it is mandatory for the use of a stretchy or elastic shirt that hugs the body beneath the GI; It can be short or long sleeved, without the necessity to follow the color requirements. It is also permitted for athlete’s to use a one piece swim garment (bathing suit) or gymnastics top. Rule revision:

8.1.8 GI pants should reach no more than 5 cm above the tibial malleolus (ankle bone). For male divisions, wearing pants of any kind under the GI pants is prohibited. For female divisions, it is permitted for the use of elastic fabric pants (that clings to the body) under the GI pants, as long as they are shorter than the GI pants.

There was some confusion from BJJ players who wrongfully understood that rashguards were mandatory for women.

BJJ black belt and IBJJF contacted IBJJF and clarified the situation:

– The only explicit change is that it is NOT allowed to wear a normal cotton t-shirt, neither for women under the gi, nor for men/women for no-gi. So, it has to be rashguard/tight
– Sports Bra is still ok for women to have under the gi, with no rashguard on top
– For no-gi, full-length tights/leggings/spats are ok for both men and women – men must have normal grappling/board shorts on top though.
