Former UFC Fighter Chris Brennan Slams IBJJF For Latest Decision: We Can’t Have Corrupt S*it Running The Sport

Chris “The Westside Strangler” Brennan is a lightweight MMA competitor who competed in various promotions including the UFC. He also grappled in the ADCC! But his experiences with various promotions were nowhere near as Scathing as his experience with the IBJJF. Some months back he didn’t hold back from commenting on corruption at nogi worlds and disorganization so he didn’t hold back on commenting the latest development:

I’ve tried to let the dust settle with this ibjjf gi and nogi thing for kids before I posted. As you can imagine, everyone has tagged me or sent it to me wonde ring what my thoughts are. Here are my thoughts.

Everyone gives the ibjjf the control that they have. Everyone allows them to dictate everything because they have tournaments with big names like Worlds etc. Ibjjf is NAGA or AGF or any other tournament. They are an organization that puts on events. However YOU let them tell you what belt you can be. You let them tell you when THEY add new belts and stripes and colors. YOU let them tell you what age a kid can or can’t be promoted. There wasn’t always an ibjjf but we allowed it to happen. Can you imagine if Kipp Kollar said ok now we are adding a lavender belt before the gray belt for kids? You’d laugh and say f*ck off. However the Brazilians are saying it a because they brought Jiu-Jitsu here we are saying ok. How bout we just say thanks, show a little gratitude, and do our thing. Sure there should be some order to the sport, but we can’t have corrupt s*it running the sport. It’s new enough here to stop it and do something about it.
Saying now that kids can’t do Nogi? Saying it develops bad technique? Lucas and Tyler have been doing Jiu-Jitsu 5 years. Never put a gi on. Lucas went 0-0 with a Brazilian multiple time gi and nogi weight class and open world champion who’s been training his whole life. Tyler went 0-0 with this year’s gi and nogi world champion and had the only submission attempts in the match. Don’t tell me it develops bad technique. Maybe they just don’t know how to teach it without the gi idk. Do you want this sport run by one organization like MMA is? It’s early enough to stop it and change it here.

All these parents holding their kids at blue for 3 and 4 years because of the competition in the ibjjf when you know your kid kills most purples and some browns and now even some blacks? Why allow it. Ibjjf is not going to tell me when I can promote my kids. So yes Lucas is probably the youngest purple belt in the world at the moment, and he’d probably have crazy hard matches with the 15 blue belt kids that do the big ibjjf tournaments, but every other purple in the world will know he’s a legit purple. Why hold him to blue to compete against the same kids for 3 years straight? We’re trying to do something bigger.

Who appointed the ibjjf to be in charge of everything? Oh that’s right, they did. Lol. We let em. That’s like Trump appointing himself president. At least you voted on that. Think about that for a little bit.

Anyway idgaf I they take away kids nogi in the ibjjf or any other organization. If that happens then we start another. If any already established promotion wants an ambassador or spokes person with ideas then hit me up.

Other wise we will continue building monsters and competing. If they let me or my kids come after this we’ll still donate our $100 to try and defy the odds of the refs at their tournaments.

One way or another Chris Brennan is not the first to promote someone younger than criteria to a certain belt – most notably Vitor Belfort was promoted to black belt at age 17:

“With Carlson (Gracie), it became ridiculous. He gave me a black belt when I was 17 years old. Everyone criticized him, saying that I had never competed. He said: ‘Come train with Vitor to see’. If the guy trains in the Gi and has the proper techniques, no need to compete, he can now earn a black belt. You don’t need to be world champion for that. Sometimes the guy is not champion, but has the right to have a black belt. Jiu-Jitsu is also a sport, “

Gordon Ryan is also currently ineligible to compete at black belt level having not spent a year as a brown belt.
