Black Belt Traveling To Rio Open Drowns At Sea in Copacabana

 

 

 Luiz Roberto Costa, 31, has gone missing. He was on his way from Brasilia to Rio Open.

Following Rio Winter Open / International Masters, Luiz decided to take a last dip on the famed Copacabana beach in the early afternoon on Monday before going back to the capital for training. However, the sea was quite rough due to strong undercurrents and he drowned.

While a number of divers tried to recover the body which was seen it couldn’t be recovered due to sea conditions.

Brazilian federation and Ribeiro Jiu-jitsu are in mourning:

“Today the Brazilian jiu-jitsu community is in mourning. Luiz Roberto (Louie) passed away from drowning at Copacabana beach in Rio. May God comfort the hears of friends and family” posted FJJB.
