Garry Tonon Won’t Compete in Metamoris: ‘ Their Offer Doesn’t Benefit Growth of the Sport’

Word is out that the people behind Metamoris are trying to have the monopoly of the PPV grappling event by asking grappling athletes to sign exclusive contracts. The athletes would only be allowed to compete in Metamoris but not with rival invitational such as Polaris, Copa Podio, or EBI. The exception would be for IBJJF and ADCC events.

Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI) and Polaris Pro Invitational are two other major invite only elite tournaments, and they have (according to sources close to their events) had their athletes approached by Metamoris in efforts to sign them to exclusive contracts.
According to Jerry Tsui of JiuJitsutimes.com, Marcelo Mafra was forced to drop out at the last minute of last weekend’s EBI 3 and Garry Tonon was asked to sign an exclusive contract with Metamoris, which he refused:

Marcelo Mafra, the 2014 IBJJF Adult Black Belt World Champion, was a last-minute scratch from the third edition of the Eddie Bravo Invitational. Mafra was replaced by UFC veteran Javier Vasquez who put on a strong performance in a losing effort again Darragh O’Connell in the first round. The loss of Mafra took place sometime between the release of the bracket this past Wednesday and the event today.
When I asked a high-level representative from EBI why Mafra was replaced in the tournament, I was told the following points:
-Ralek Gracie and Metamoris signed Mafra to an exclusive deal resulting in the last minute withdrawal from EBI 3.
-Garry Tonon was offered an exclusive deal with Metamoris from Ralek Gracie that also included dropping out of EBI 3. Garry declined to accept the deal.
-The source speculated that Ralek Gracie and Metamoris were purposely trying to hurt the EBI 3 event by poaching talent away just prior to the event.

Garry Tonon made a statement today about the whole situation and his reasons for not accepting Metamoris’ offer:

There is more to the unethical practices of Metamoris.

The Metamoris 6 card  features Josh Barnett, Cyborg Abreu, Roberto Satoshi, Clark Gracie etc..It is truly amazing, however the event for the second time in a row is on the same time and day (May 9th 2015) as Copa Podio Heavyweight Grandprix.
The audience will once again be split between the two instead of being able to have everyone watching both shows. Copa Podio anounced their date before Metamoris on February 28th. The Metamoris 6 card was announced a few days by Sherdog.com on March 4th.

This is the 2nd time that both events are on the same day and same time. Last time was in November during Metamoris 5 and Copa Podio middleweight Grand Prix.

At the end of the day, there is enough room for all these great pro events. Let’s hope that all events can schedule and that athletes can compete in all events so that the sport as a whole, and not just one event, can grow.
