2016 World Pro: Marcus Buchecha Out, Big Upsets in Open Weight

One of the most important Jiu-Jitsu events in the world, the Abu Dhabi World Pro Jiu-Jitsu 2016 saw the first black belts matches this Thursday (21st) where the finals of the male and female absolute have been set. Full of surprises and upsets, the open weight final will have Felipe Preguica Pena face José Junior for men and Tayane Porfirio face Bia Mesquita for women.

2015 Abu Dhabi World Pro Champion Marcus ‘Buchecha’ Almeida withdrew from the competition at the last minute from both the absolute and weight divisions.

Buchecha told Flograppling:

“It was a really tough decision but it wasn’t mine. My master Leo Vieira convinced me not to do it and focus 100% on Worlds. I’m older and have more experience so unfortunately I had to listen. It was hard but I had to do it.”

“I came here to fight so to not do it was disappointing. It is what it is but I’ll be much better at Worlds. I’m going there ready to kill or die. Maybe here I was going to try a strategy and that’s not my game. I think he (Leo Vieira) was right.”

For the first time ever, the Word Pro is streamed live in English on Flograppling.com for 4 days straight.

In the semifinal, the athlete of UAEJJF Team – Training Hall would have face the winner of Erberth Santos vs Victor Honorio, but both were disqualified for lack of action in their match.

In the other bracket, Preguica defeated Marcio Andre, Claudio Calasans, Dany Gerard and Alexander Trans. Regardless of who is champion, the Abu Dhabi World Pro will have an unprecedented absolute champion in 2016.
