The 2015 Pan came to an end this Sunday in California. Bernardo Faria made histrory by winning the black belt open weight for the second time . The black belt from Alliance managed to win the gold in weight and also won the title in the absolute.
At super-heavy, Bernardo was declared the winner after closing with Alliance team mate Leo Nogueira. Bfore reaching the finals, he submited the up and coming Erberth Santos in the semifinal with a fantastic leg-lock.
In the open weight, Bernardo beat Alexander Trans and Luiz Panza, respectively, to reach the final with Leandro Lo . The student of Cicero Costha, ibeat Yuri Simões and Léo Nogueira by sweeps in order to reach the absolute final. In the final, Bernardo passed guard and finished the opponent with a precise choke. Despite the painful defeat, Lo can be happy: he took gold in the lightweight after beating Otavio Sousa.
In the women, Gabi Garcia repeated the feat of the Europeans and submitted Mackenzie Dern in the open weight final. The black belt under Fabio Gurgel got a choke and added another achievement to her glorious career. Mackenzie, in turn, did not go home empty-handed: the young black belt snapped up the title in her weight class final defeating Tammy Musumeci with a leg-lock.
On Saturday, Monique Elias suffered a broken foot when beating Tammy Griego 10-0 in the quarter-finals of the open weight and had to stay out of the race for gold.
However, despite the injury, Monique did not abandon the tournament. On Sunday, the former model returned to the mat and proved her resilience. The Alliance athlete under Mário Reis had a great battle with Luiza Monteiro in the final of the middleweight division. Behind on the scoreboard, Monique got a sweep at the last minute and secured the gold medal with a victory by 6-4.
Rooster weight war
Bruno Malfacine celebrated the victory in the final of the rooster weight. It was against his biggest rival. The Alliance black belt was able to submit Caio Terra with a choke and did not contain the euphoria after the great triumph.
