[WATCH] Medical Staff Slow To Help Injured IBJJF Competitor – But For Good Reason

In a recent IBJJF tournament, some critiques were cast on the medical team’s performance – following an incident that emphasized the paramount importance of proficient medical support in the realm of combat sports.

Namely, as one of the matches escalated in intensity, a competitor was left turning in pain after a forceful takedown; holding onto his arm on the mat.
The referee’s attempts to get medical assistance were met with unexpected difficulty, highlighting a worrying gap in the event’s emergency response protocol – as well as in what appeared to be their uncertainty in how to deal with the incident once they got on the spot.

Watch the video of the incident on the following link.

The reason for the medical staff’s late arrival might have been more than valid, however.
It appears that the team was occupied with assisting a woman who, has, reportedly, lost feeling and control over his legs during one of the other matches.

Which further underlines the importance of having an adequate number of medical staff on site, so as to ensure maximum safety of the tournament participants.
