Cyborg’s New Weapons: Cuban Judo Olympian & Ronda Rousey’s ex Teammate at USA Judo

Last month, news of Cris Cyborg being signed by the UFC came first as speculation when Cyborg called out Ronda Rousey:

“Lorenzo signed me. I’m back and coming for you.”

UFC president Dana White would provide confirmation on UFC Tonight that Cyborg had indeed signed a contract prior to her last fight, a 46-second demolition of Charmaine Tweet at Invicta FC 11, February 28, in Los Angeles.

The much awaited fight will only be a reality if Cris Cyborg fulfills her contractual condition in order to fight Ronda Rousey: to keep her weight down to the bantamweight division range. Dana White:

“For her next fight, she’s going to try to make 135 pounds.”

The fight might take up to a year to happen as Rousey will face Bethe Correia at UFC 190, August 1, in Rio de Janeiro.

Cyborg will probably have another fight for Invicta FC in the meantime.

At the moment she is around 145 lbs and is training hard in preparation for Rousey.

She has enlisted the help of a two-time Olympic bronze medalist, Israel Hernandez from Cuba. At the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics he won bronze medals in the men’s Half Lightweight (60–66 kg) category.

Israel is working with Cyborg because his wife Valerie Gotay used to be teammates with Rousey on the USA Olympic Judo team and could have some inside information and advice on how to defeat Rousey.
