The 2013 World No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Championship is done and dusted. The weekend was long and jam packed full of action at the Long Beach Walter Pyramid. At black belt adult, a number of big names were out of the competition following the ADCC Worlds in China and some unfortunate injuries in training. However, many ADCC competitors were looking to either bounce back from poor performances, or continue their recent success at the highest level.

Here is what happened at black belt adult:

Rooster weight:

The final was as expected between Caio Terra and Fabio Passos. Caio submitted Passos with a nasty toe hold in under three minutes.

Light Feather:

Laercio Fernandes faced Rafael ‘Barata’ Freitas in the final. After defending a tight guillotine choke, Fernandes took Freitas’s and scored 4 points which crowned him the champion.

Featherweight:

With Rafael Mendes and Cobrinha both missing, Justin Rader faced Osvaldo Moizinho in the final. The match was tied all the way to the end and Rader got the referee decision.

Lightweight:

JT defeated Marcelo Mafra 2-0 with a late takedown. This was JT’s first gold at black belt no gi. It was a nice comeback after his heartbreaking loss to Tanquinho at last year’s final.

Middleweight:

Gilbert Burns was back in action and beat Leandro Lo to advance to the final against GFTeam’s Victor Oliveira. He won 2-0 thanks to a takedown.

Medium-heavy:

BJJ legend Eduardo Telles still has it. He faced young gun Felipe Pena in a very close final match. The match was tied on points (2-2). Down on advantages (2-4), Telles took Pena’s back in the dying seconds of the match for his first ever world title as a black belt.

Heavyweight:

Brand new black belt Jackson Sousa got his firts ever black belt gold after a gentlemen’s agreement with teammate Lucas Leite.

Superheavy:

Americans James Puopolo and Eliot Kelly met in the final. Puopolo caught Kelly with a  guillotine.

Ultraheavy:

Rafael Lovato competed in the Ultra heavy once again meeting Fabiano Scherner in the final. He won by advantages (3-1).

Absolute: Gentlemen’s agreement between Leandro Lo and Murilo Santana.
