UFC 4 Vet Ron Van Clief Competes in BJJ at Age 72

 

Ron Van Clief is known to MMA fans as the man who fought Royce Gracie at UFC 4. He is to date the oldest person to fight in the UFC at the age of 51. Gracie won the match by submission with a rear naked choke near the four-minute mark. Ron went on to serve as the commissioner of the UFC.

Van Clief is an American martial artist and an actor in Hollywood and Hong Kong action films. He began his martial arts career competing in both full-contact and non-contact karate tournaments in New York then internationally, going on to win several national tournaments and world championships.[which?] He was nicknamed “The Black Dragon” by Bruce Lee.

Van Clief was a student of Goju-Ryu masters Peter Urban, Frank Ruiz, and Moses Powell, as well as WingTsun founder Leung Ting Modern Arnis (Remy Presas) Brazilian jiu-jitsu (Joe Moreira).

Van Clief currently lives in Hawaii and enjoys the Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle were he trains at Relson Gracie Academy. Now at age 72, he has competed recently in a local BJJ tournament in Honolulu in the master blue belt division against a much younger opponent!
