The Iron Sheik Displeased With Iran’s Decision To Ban USA Wrestlers From WC

The Iron Sheik, born Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri is someone uniquely qualified to comment on the latest political developments to greatly impact the world of sports.

Vaziri was a member of the Iranian Olympic Team back in 1968  for the Mexico City bound Summer Olympics. But following an assassination of one of his friends he moved to the United States where he managed to win gold at the National AAU Championships in Greco Roman wrestling in 1971 and become the assistant coach of two USA Olympic Squads.

Later he became a professional wrestler and actor better known by his ring name The Iron Sheik. Nowadays he enjoys a huge twitter following and is quite outspoken.

While a member of the American team that was supposed to appear at the World Cup in Iran, David Taylor wants to stay neutral, as Dayton Daily News reports:

“The World Cup is a premier event, but in terms of options outside of it, we’re talking through different scenarios,” Taylor said. “Between everyone, we’ll go with what’s best for the United States moving forward. We’ll be ready to wrestle at a moment’s notice and we’ll continue to look forward.”

Meanwhile a Seattle judge has issued a temporary nationwide block on Donald Trump’s ban on travellers from 7 mainly Muslim nations.

Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson described the ban as unconstitutional.

“Folks who had visas, folks who were allowed to travel were denied that right without any due process whatsoever – that’s un-American and unconstitutional,” he said in a BBC interview.

Courts in at least four other states – Virginia, New York, Massachusetts and Michigan – are hearing cases challenging Mr Trump’s executive order.

The ban – which only applied to Massachusetts – is due to expire on 5 February.
