The Incredible Story Of Jiu-Jitsu in Mauritius with BJJ Black Belt Tawfiq Jaunbocus

Jiu-Jitsu is so widespread that it’s flourishing in unexpected places.

The island country of Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres off the south-east coast of the African continent. Mauritius, as isolated as it is, has now become a hub of Jiu-Jitsu with 32 academies and 2,500 practitioners with a population of 1,3 million.

Zeid Salman aka  @thejitsguy (Middle East’s number 1 BJJ podcast) interviewed Tawfiq Jaunbocus, a very rare individual with a fascinating story behind his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Journey.

Tawfiq spent 15 years practicing and then teaching Japanese Jiu Jitsu as a Black Belt. After a trip to Reunion Island, Tawfiq was confronted with the reality of BJJ when he was tapped out repeatedly by a bjj blue belt.

From that moment on, he completely changed his school from Japanese Jiu Jitsu to BJJ and put on a white belt and started teaching and embracing the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Tawfiq started from scratch and went on to build BJJ in Mauritius. He was the country’s first BJJ black belt, and is the president of the Mauritius Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation.

This is truly a Cinderella BJJ story. Check out the incredible story here:
