Roberto Cyborg Explains What Keeps Him Motivated To Compete in BJJ Despite IBJJF Doping Ban

BJJ world champion Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu is confirmed in the Absolute GP of BJJ Stars 10, to be disputed on Saturday, April 22nd, in São Paulo, Brazil. At 42 years old, Cyborg said he was excited for another huge challenge. Owner of a victorious career in Jiu-Jitsu, the Fight Sports ace intends to prove in the tournament that age is just a number and explained what motivates him to stay active against young stars, such as Erich Munis, Mica Galvão, Victor Hugo Costa and other beasts.

At the 2022 No-Gi World Championships, 5 elite atheltes Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu, Vagner Rocha, Jose Henrique Cardoso, Jonnatas Gracie, and Igor Feliz were all suspended for failing doping tests.

Here’s the case what happened with Cyborg:

Tested positive for exogenous testosterone and its metabolites as the result of an out-of-competition urine sample collected on December 20, 2022.

He accepted a three-year period of ineligibility that began on January 27, 2023, the date he was provisionally suspended from competition.

The suspended Cyborg stated what motivates him to keep competing in Jiu-Jitsu:

“Many people fight because they like to be champions. I fight because I like to fight. I love challenges. I don’t always need to be prepared or do a camp. I like the challenge and challenge myself daily. I believe this has always been my biggest motivation: the love for Jiu-Jitsu and the challenges. I try to pass this on to those around me who admire my work. A lot of people have a lot of excuses. While I’m fighting as an adult, I’m going to fight and beat whoever’s in front of me. Age, after all, is just a number”, reinforced the two-time Pan American champion.

“The tournament has always surpassed itself in terms of production quality. And now, bringing an award like this, BJJ Stars certainly goes up a notch. I am very happy to see an event like the BJJ Stars in our country investing and betting on our Jiu-Jitsu”.

Another suspended world champion, will also be competing at BJJ Stars. Mica Galvao was hailed as the youngest IBJJF world champion. The Brazilian from Manaus defeated Tye Ruotolo in the final to claim gold at the Gi Worlds in June. The 19-year-old athlete tested positive for clomiphene in his system. After the IBJJF World Championships, Mica won the silver medal at the ADCC World Championships in Las Vegas.

The news of the one-year ban came after the BJJ Stars fight card was announced. Users have repeatedly asked if Mica Galvao will be performing at the tournament. The organizers clearly stated that they do not operate under the IBJJF federation, and Galvao’s exclusion includes competitions under the banner of the largest BJJ federation in the world.

So, do IBJJF drug tests and suspensions make sense?
