Khabib Nurmagomedov got a surprisingly tough opponent after all. The Matt Serra camp produced a fearless opponent who stepped up and fought the now undisputed lightweight champion in a single day.

 

And fight they did. Ultimately against all odds the match went 5 rounds with Khabib getting decision. Here’s how mmamania recapped it:

 Round 1: Iaquinta with an early right hand. Pressuring, denies a takedown. Jab from Nurmagomedov. Nurmagomedov shoots, gets his hands on an ankle, and takes him down into half guard. Iaquinta trying to bridge, gives up his back. Nice scramble and he makes it to his feet. Nurmagomedov still attached. High-crotch and down he goes again. Nurmagomedov hops into mount as Iaquinta looks for a kimura. Iaquinta makes it to his knee and Nurmagomedov looks for punches. More left hands. Two minutes to go.

Nurmagomedov riding him hard. Iaquinta makes it to his feet, tripped back down and Nurmagomedov drops some postured-up punches. More left hands piling up as Iaquinta stands. 10-9 Nurmagomedov.

Round 2: Iaquinta moving forward. Right hand lands for him. Nurmagomedov lands a right hand, looks for an ankle again. Another shot from Nurmagomedov and he takes him down into guard. Iaquinta briefly threatens an armbar, stymied by the fence. Iaquinta gets to his knees, eats another left hand. One hook in for Nurmagomedov two minutes in. Nurmagomedov drags him back down as Iaquinta looks for the switch. Both hooks now. Nurmagomedov threatens the RNC, not there. Two minutes to go.

Iaquinta flattened out. Nurmagomedov looking for the choke, starts dropping punches instead. Great control by Nurmagomedov. One minute to go. Iaquinta trying to roll, can’t dislodge the Dagestani. 10-8 Nurmagomedov.

Round 3: 1-2 from Nurmagomedov to start. Jab exchange. 1-2 from Iaquinta. Left hook lands for Nurmagomedov. One minute in. Leg kick connects. Jabs piling up for him. 1-2 connects. 3-2. More jabs. Iaquinta avoids the next low single and they trade right hands two minutes in. Good right hand from Iaquinta. Body shot. Yet more jabs from Nurmagomedov. Two minutes to go.

Iaquinta checks a leg kick. Yet more jabs. Iaquinta counters a leg kick with a right hand. Nurmagomedov tries to spin. One minute to go. Nurmagomedov continues to plug away at Iaquinta’s bleeding nose. 10-9 Nurmagomedov.

Round 4: 3-2 from Nurmagomedov, then a low single. Doesn’t land, uppercut does. Left hand from Iaquinta. Nurmagomedov snaps out a front kck, cannot tie up. Lead left hook by Nurmagomedov. More jabs. Good right hands by Nurmagomedov. Two minutes in. Iaquinta limp-legs out of a single-leg. Two minutes in. 3-2 from Nurmagomedov. Body shots by Iaquinta. Iaquinta digs a right downstairs, eats more jabs. Two minutes to go.

Round 5: Nurmagomedov shoots, Iaquinta limp-lefts out. Left hook lands for Nurmagomedov. More jabs. Iaquinta goes low-high with his left hooks. Left hook again. Iaquinta fires an uppercut. One minute in. Good 1-2-1. 2-1 lands. Iaquinta fakes a shot as Nurmagomedov fires his jab. 1-1-2 by Nurmagomedov. Nurmagomedov ties up on the cage, denied. Uppercut from Nurmagomedov, right hands. Nurmagomedov charging after him, drags him down yet again. One hook in. Two minutes to go.

Final result: Nurmagomedov def. Iaquinta by unanimous decision
