Germaine de Randamie Refusing To Take Cyborg Fight – Will Not Fight a Cheater

Cris Cyborg has had an interesting week. Following an explosive altercation with Angela Magana now Germaine de Randamie is coming out as refusing to take the fight against Cyborg because of her history of steroid use.

Back in January 2012, it was announced that Justino had tested positive for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid. As a result of the banned substance, the fight’s result was changed to a no contest. Justino had her license suspended for one year and was fined $2,500.

In December 2016 UFC was notified of a potential USADA doping violation by Justino. Justino’s team immediately responded that it was in regards to a substance that helped her recover from her weight cut.Later in February of this year Justino was granted a retroactive therapeutic use exemption (TUE).

In a statement released to MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani on Friday, de Randamie’s manager Brian Butler explained their stance on not fighting the Brazilian.

“Germaine and her team have talked, and the position is that she will not fight Cyborg because Cyborg is a known and proven cheater. Even after so much scrutiny has been put on Cyborg, she still managed to pop for something and will always be a person of suspicion who is trying to beat the system rather than just conforming to the rules.

“For that reason, Germaine and her team don’t believe that Cyborg should be allowed to compete in the UFC at all. If that is the only fight the UFC wants, then Germaine is willing to wait and see if the UFC will strip her belt before making her next move.”

As a reminder Amanda Nunes also had the desire to throw her hat in the ring for the new weight division, but only as long as Cyborg was suspended by the USADA. She quickly backtracked when Cyborg was granted therapeutic use exemption.

One way or another UFC’s new women’s division seems to be in a world of trouble.
