Garry Tonon: “Don’t Treat Your BJJ Academy Like a Drive-Thru”

In a recent podcast interview, Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Garry Tonon spoke to the importance of cultivating a healthy coach-student dynamic. He cautioned against viewing the membership fee solely as a commercial exchange, explaining how this perspective can lead to dysfunctional environments.

Tonon emphasized that while instructors provide a service and students pay tuition, the fees do not fully capture the substantial value provided by a quality jiu-jitsu program. Some students today approach their academy like a fast food restaurant, feeling entitled to demand certain services simply due to payment.

In Tonon’s view, this transactional mindset prevents students from fully engaging with the academy community and developing meaningful relationships. It causes them to just attend training and leave without contributing to the broader culture.

The black belt noted that when many students treat the gym like a basic commercial transaction, it negatively impacts instructors. Coaches feel less warmth and connection with their students, decreasing their willingness to voluntarily spend unpaid time assisting with competitions, attending events, and providing extra support.

Tonon believes student attitude greatly influences the overall gym environment. With gratitude, trust, and a desire to support teammates and coaches, students will likely receive reciprocity. This creates a positive culture where both students and instructors are inspired to contribute more.

However, when students act entitled and self-interested, viewing their membership as a purchased product, instructors often reciprocate by adopting a cold transactional approach. Over time, this can cultivate dysfunctional team dynamics and toxic cultures.

The elite grappler emphasized students’ power to be a positive force by being great teammates, offering help, and expressing appreciation to coaches. Contributing to the team community in this way allows students to maximize the value of their membership.
