Gabi Garcia Announces Return To IBJJF Worlds

Fresh off of her ADCC triumph Gabi Garcia will be returning to the IBJJF competition scene.

With Rizin being largely unable to find her a good match and with her record unscathed she’s looking to extend her legacy:

“Now, it’s 2019 to win the four-time championship, I need to train a lot for that. There’s Hannette Staack, who is an ADCC legend, Kyra Gracie, who is three-time champion too, like me, so who knows, I’ll do it differently once again in history, dial my name again. (About the IBJJF World Championship) Next year I complete 10 years of my first black belt title, so I’m going to fight, yes, next year’s World Cup, this is already confirmed to my head. I hope I do not have a close MMA fight, but if I have one, I’ll try to train Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. But I’m going to fight in this 10-year celebration to try to get one more weight and absolute, who knows how to end my kimono career in the best way possible.” – Garcia told tatame

On competing at ADCC and igniting the grappling fire:

It was sensational. I always sleep on the plane, and this time I could not, it was difficult to sleep, because I wanted to arrive and fight soon, I was in a very big adrenaline. But I was calm in all the fights, I believe that I am more mature, the MMA also brought this to me. I knew how to control my adrenaline, I knew what I was going to do in my fights, I drew what I was going to do, and in my first fight, the girl accelerated a lot, got under me fast, tried two finishes … Even Fábio (Gurgel) for me to be calm, but it was not me who accelerated, it was her, but it worked, right? It was the fastest finals of the championship. The energy was very good, the audience of Finland applauding me, it was surreal. I think the Jiu-Jitsu audience started to change with me and I’m very happy. I believe it was one of the most important titles for me, as a competitor … Show for people that I am Gabi Garcia. Do not talk out of your mouth, do not judge people. Whoever thinks a lot, there’s my answer for them (laughs).

Garcia will be returning to the IBJJF scene – Garcia, tested positive for Clomiphene as the result of an in-competition urine sample she provided on June 2, 2013 at the International Brazillian Jiu- Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) World Jiu-Jitsu Championships in Long Beach, Calif. USADA was contracted by IBJJF to conduct testing for the event and collected Garcia’s sample in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Agency International Standard for Testing. At the time she did not receive a period of ineligibility and was eligible to compete but was stripped of that world title.
