Rosny, France. Fouad Ben Ahmed was preparing to watch the movie “The man of of steel” (superman) together with his 2 children in a cinema on Wednesday night at 9:40 pm. A man is then introduced himself into the cinema, armed with a shotgun. “He first threatened the cashier before heading towards the clients lining up to buy tickets inside the cinema” says Fouad. The 37 year old father of two states that in this moment he was “very afraid for [his] children.” Immediately, he decided to follow the man quietly before controlling him and subduing him with a jiu-jitsu technique.

“I was lining up with my kids to buy our tickets for the ‘Man of steel movie’. I then saw a man walking towards the cashier with a shotgun. It was obvious that he wasn’t a police officer. The cashier immediately called for help. As the man was walking towards the other clients with his gun, I told my children to relax and that I would be back. As the man approached us, I hid behind him and followed him for 10 meters as he was walking. When I felt ready I applied a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu choke hold on him from the back and put him to sleep and then put him to the ground and controlled him there. The security and police then came and arrested the man. I had to do something as my children and other children were there. We always of of these massacres with shootouts in public place. We actually went and watched the movie after all that.”

A great story and I love martial arts. But, do you really need to know Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, in order to be at the right place in the right time, and sneak up behind someone and choke them?

Be in the right place at the right time? No. Sneak behind a person? No. Successfully choke out a person from behind? YES! Successfully choke out a person with a gun without that person getting shots off? Most definitely YES!!! (Gracie BJJ 2 yrs, TKD, 2 years, Shotokan Karate 12 years)

No you don’t have to necessarily KNOW jiu-jistu. But training while give you the necessary confidence to sneak up on that man (aman with a shotgun in his hands with bad intentions by the way, again NECESSARY confidence is needed) and KNOW that when you get there you’ll be able to properly and quickly choke that man out with effeciency and a minimal amount of struggle. Or on the flip side, you can look your kids in the eyes and say “I’ll be right back” and turn around and THINK you can sneak in this guy and HOPE that when you get there you can choke him out without a fight (again with a man with a shotgun, and all you have is hands, feet, knees, elbows, and your forehead). It would kinda suck to figure out you were only half right and when you got there that choke you so hoped would work in a real-life situation wasn’t quite as efficint as you’d thought. Trust me man, train Jiu-Jitsu learn to really defend yourself and your family if need be:

Got anymore plugs? Instead of training to make yourself a better martial artist, you spend your time here advertising?

I’m glad this Frenchman choked this guy out. Take notes America! Bring back your wrestling to Highschool, teach children character through competition and grappling. It builds a healthy ego, and teachs you things like this ^ Men of the world, do not continue to be femenized and pussified. Go take some Judo or BJJ and let’s stop these gunmen every time from now on!

..feminized.. come to my gym if you want to get feminized. The girls there would tap out 99.9% of men in any weight class around the world. You need a reality check buddy

I don’t think you actually appreciate the point he was making. Sure, there are women who can fight. However, put a, oh never mind I think you’re too think. Go grab your man purse and head to the spa. next time try not to read so far into everything.

Probably took longer to use the term “Mata leão” instead of Rear Naked Choke than it does to learn it! ;)

no you dont NEED to know BJJ to put some out/ to sleep, but you can defend, control, and execute the choke alot more effectively if you do know BJJ. Just like you dont need to know boxing to knock someone out

The title is bs, its like a taken out from a tabloid for low-lifes. How did you know that he avoided a shooting massacre and not just a robbery? all to give glory to bjj. stupid.

I believe that jui-jitsu is the best martial arts for such a dilemma. If you were top punch or kick a gunman, the gun could go off, but if you control the situation with special techniques you can subdue almost anyone.

My guess it was a rear naked choke that was used. Would love to know if and how the gun was controlled during the choking. Any thoughts?

Most likely he hooked the arm holding the shotgun with his feet (like you’d normally control with hooks in). And if the guy had both hands on his shotgun, then both legs would be working to entangle the arms. Also it only takes 6-10 seconds to pass out from this kind of choke so even if the guy didn’t control the gun, because it was a shotgun and not a handgun, it’d be crazy hard for the criminal to actually shoot the guy choking him before passing out.

Thank you Fouad for definitely saving lives of many innocent people. I don’t need to become a skeptical or even an investigator to doubt your story. Thank from across the Atlantic.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will teach you how to control your opponent by using leverage and proper technique. Thanks!
