The Difference Between A GOGO Choke & A 10 Finger Guillotine

Josh Barnett has not been submitted by anybody in 19 years….Until he fought Ben Rothwell at UFC on FOX 18 last weekend.

Rothwell tapped out the catch wrestling specialist with what many people thought was a guillotine, but it wasn’t. The choke that Rothwell used is what we call a “GOGO” choke. It was developed by Rothwell’s coach, Luiz Claudio, who currently resides and teaches martial arts in Schaumburg, Illinois. The secret of this GOGO choke has long been hidden.

Rothwell also submitted Matt Mitrione in the UFC with the same GOGO choke.

He is keeping the details of the choke a secret but he told Foxsports that it is not like a 10 finger guillotine:

“I’m not going to show the technique, but it’s obviously the hand-grip. I hear people say things like, ’10-fingers,’ ‘squeezal-diesel,’ different variations of guillotine. It’s none of those, if you watch what they do with their hands. Luiz and I shake our heads. It’s something very unique.

“I’m very proud to be representing with Luiz because Rickson Gracie is a renowned black belt [and he] made Luiz a black belt. When Rickson Gracie asks Luis, ‘Show me this go-go,’ that’s something special. To watch Luiz become a master, to create his own things that are so effective, I feel like my submission skills are like a cheat code out there, right now. Guys don’t know what I’m doing.”

Here’s the choke:

Catch Wrestler Dan Theodore talks about how Rothwell’s GOGO choke is slightly different than a regular ten finger guillotine:

I spent 14 months training with Rothwell back at MFS in 2005 and he even lived with me his first week in Iowa. He may use a slightly different grip (and I am even slightly changing the way I will do it as well as I seriously threatened it twice yesterday against a 90kg former Deep Champ when he was trying to double leg me against the wall but just was lacking a tiny bit to finish) and Rothwell likely aims deeper into adam’s apple hence the Gogo name but this gives you a very good idea of mechanics of doing it and even finishing if they roll to their back.
