How to Defend Against the Backstep Guard Pass by Roberto ‘Gordo ‘Correa

Roberto ‘Gordo ‘Correa shows how to defend against the backstep guard pass.

Roberto Corrêa de Lima, is known worldwide as Gordo. He’s been teaching Jiu-Jitsu for 20 years and succeeded in forming great champions in both jiu-jitsu and MMA. Each class contains techniques developed for a specific belt level. Therefore, it’s possible to do a more specific job for each student. Celso Vinicius, Braga Neto, Rafael dos Anjos, Renato Babalu and Kyra Gracie are some of the names that train at the academy.
A resident of Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, he started training jiu-jitsu in 1986, at the age of 15, influenced by his close friend Ralph Gracie.

A purple belt at 18 years old, he suffered a serious knee injury and had to readapt to training, therefore developing the half guard position and becoming known as the “offensive half guard creator”. Nowadays this is one of the most used positions in jiu-jitsu and MMA.

In 1993, at the age of 22 he was graded black belt and won many national and international competitions, such as the world championship, which he won 2 times.

Throughout his career, he taught at prestigious academies such as: Gracie Recreio, with Ralph Gracie, Gracie Ipanema with Renzo Gracie and Gracie Ribeirão Preto.

Experienced athlete and with very offensive jiu-jitsu skills, he nowadays teaches all he’s learned to his students at Largo da Barra and Novo Leblon academies in Rio de Janeiro.
