Pan 2016: Big Names To Watch & What To Expect

 

The Bren Events Center in Irvine, California (USA), will receives from this Thursday until Sunday 20th of March, another edition of the Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championships. The competition, organized by IBJJF will feature the top BJJ competitors, and the return of the likes of Bernardo Faria – who was recovering from injury since the end of last year – and Dominyka Obelenyte , who appears as a favorite for the race in the super heavyweight category and also in the women’s open weight.

Miyao brothers, Lo, Barral, Galvão and other big names.

In addition to the aforementioned Bernardo Faria, other great fighters promise to shake the competition in their respective categories and also in the open weight during Pan. Second place in the ranking of IBJJF Joao Miyao is the main favorite to secure the gold at light-featherweight. At featherweight, his brother Paulo – leader of the ranking – in addition to Márcio André, appear as the favourites, but can count on names like Bruno Frazatto, Osvaldo Moizinho and Isaque Paiva in contention for the title. In the middle heavyweight category, the expectation is for good performances from Romulo Barral and Leandro Lo , among many other revelations.

For the heavyweights, Cássio Francis and the experienced Léo Nogueira promise good contest against other promising athletes, while among the super-heavyweight, Bernardo Faria, Yuri Simões and Jared Dopp emerge as favorites for the gold in the category. In ultra heavy, there is a very high level, as fighters like Joao Gabriel Rocha, Mohamed Aly and even the BJJ legend and leader of Atos – André Galvão will be in action at the event.

Women promise a real show

There is high expectation in the female divisions. In the roosterweight category, Gezary Matuda is the favorite, while Mackenzie Dern and Bia Mesquita appear as favorites in feather and lightweight divisions, respectively. At middle, it will be a war between Luiza Monteiro, Michelle Nicolini and Amanda Loewen. Among the heavyweight, Andresa Correa will try to keep the great phase of her career, while Fernanda Mazzelli and Dominyka Obelenyte emerge as the best names in heavy and super-heavy categories, respectively.
