A sambo tournament at Sports Facility No.3 in Melitopol (Ukraine) was ruined by a catastrophic accident – when an anti-tank grenade launcher “accidentally discharged” during the event.
This incident, which took place on February 17, 2024, resulted in several attendees sustaining minor injuries in the Russia-occupied city.
As reported, the “trigger of an anti-tank grenade launcher was involuntarily pulled”; leading to a loud explosion that echoed through the sports facility.
The immediate aftermath saw attendees in a state of panic, with first responders rushing to provide medical aid. Fortunately, due to their prompt action, hospitalization was avoided for those affected.
The sports facility was quickly evacuated and secured by local authorities.
The explosion has deeply affected the Melitopol community and the wider region of Zaporizhzhia Oblast, prompting a mix of shock and concern.
Ivan Fedorov, the Head of Zaporizhzhia Oblast Military Administration, confirmed the grenade launcher’s accidental discharge as the cause of the explosion.
An investigation was immediately launched, focusing on the sports facility and the circumstances leading to this dangerous oversight.
