Craig Jones Shares Controversial Lesson Colby Covington Taught About USA At UFC 296

UFC 296, which took place on December 16th, featured a main event heavyweight title fight between reigning champion Leon Edwards and challenger Colby Covington.
Edwards secured a unanimous decision victory, marking Covington’s third loss in his last five octagon appearances.

The pre-fight press conference, however, was marked by Covington’s harsh verbal jabs at Edwards – including a controversial remark about Edwards’ deceased father.
This comment escalated tensions, leading to Edwards hurling a water bottle at Covington, requiring security intervention.

And, well, BJJ community’s favorite Craig Jones – who was present during the fight week – shared his thoughts via Instagram about Covington’s approach to trash talk.
Jones pointed out a “lesson” about American culture as reflected in Covington’s words:

A valuable lesson Colby Covington taught us about America and that is you can say anything you want.

You can walk out, say: “I hate gay people, I hate women. I think the homeless people should die.”
As long as you follow it with: “But I support first responders. I support the troops and god bless America”, and the whole crowd will cheer.

Jones concluded his thoughts with a… Provocative analogy:

America is basically a sports team, but a sports team in the Special Olympics.
That’s how I’d summarize basically what we learned from this weekend.
