During an interview with Kyra Gracie, Rickson Gracie shared that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease two years ago.
Gracie, who was undefeated as a vale tudo fighter between 1980 and 2000, explained that the disorder has affected his motor system, causing tremors in his hands and reducing his ability to move.
Parkinson’s disease is a brain disorder that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements, such as shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination. Symptoms usually begin gradually and worsen over time. As the disease progresses, people may have difficulty walking and talking. Boxer Muhamad Ali suffered from Parkinson’s disease.
Despite this, Gracie expressed that the diagnosis did not cause him any trauma. He stated that he is prepared for anything in his life and accepts both his mistakes and victories. Gracie also mentioned that this neurological condition made him aware of his age and reality. Although he experiences hand tremors and some movement deficiency, Gracie said that these symptoms do not bother him much and that his motivation to work and get up in the morning is still present.
Rickson stated:
“I’m ready for anything in my life. I accept not only my mistakes, but also my victories. I accept life and what I’ve done, so I’m happy today. But this neurologic condition opened my eyes to my age and to reality. It hasn’t changed much since then, but I have some hand tremors, a certain movement deficiency, things I didn’t have before.”
