Magician Criss Angel Promoted to ‘Purple Belt in MMA’ on Stage by Frank Mir

Criss Angel, real name Christopher Nicholas Sarantakos is an American magician, illusionist and musician. He is often referred to as one of the world’s most successful illusionists, generating in excess of $150 million dollars in tourism revenue for Las Vegas in one year.

Angel is a long time MMA and BJJ fan and has been training in both mostly with Frank Mir.

He was recently promoted to the rank of “purple belt in MMA” by UFC legend Frank Mir, during a performance. Jake Shields was also in attendance.

Some people were questioning what a belt in MMA meant since technically MMA doesn’t have a belt system.

Angel answered:

“Actually Mir MMA which encompasses standup and ground. Obviously BJJ and wrestling are huge componentsof the ground game and takedowns.”

According to a 2019 interview Angel has been training BJJ and MMA, since 2018/19

What sort of workout routine do you maintain now?

I have a really, really great gym in my house. It’s about 4,000 square feet. It’s got weights, some cardio equipment, boxing gear, and I’m getting really heavily into jiu-jitsu, so I added a spot with four-inch mats. I try to train five or six days a week. Sometimes it’s a 3.2-mile fast walk, or swimming, or getting into the gym and rolling around. I’m starting to get more into MMA again for a project that requires me to utilize some of those skills.
