Felipe Pena ended the year with one of the most interesting challenges – a 1 hour long sub only fight against the Danaher Death Squad resident “King” Gordon Ryan.
After about 40 minutes of the fight Pena managed to score a sub – a rear naked choke.
Pena analyzed the hour long duel for tatame :
“He (Gordon Ryan) talks a lot of bs and makes a lot of excuses. I tried to ignore his provocations and focus on my training … To tell you the truth, this (Gordon Ryan’s provocation) motivated me a lot. That it was going to disturb me, but in fact the opposite happened totally, because I entered with a lot of will in the fight (laughs) “
Pena famously banned Gordon on all social media platforms prior to the bout.
As for the peculiar format of the bout, Pena commented:
It was a different challenge. I agreed to fight in the rules and place he chose, and I was not used to this kind of fighting. But I have a lot of confidence in my Jiu-Jitsu and I’m happy that everything worked out and I got another finish.
Of course Gordon Ryan additionally clarified he’s not interested in Pena’s challenge:
