In a recent episode of the “Connect Cast” podcast, Alliance’s leader and Jiu-Jitsu luminary, Fábio Gurgel, shared his insights on Nicholas Meregali, a standout figure in today’s Jiu-Jitsu and Grappling circles. Gurgel observed Meregali’s confident demeanor, attributing it to a deliberate marketing strategy aimed at enhancing fight sales and increasing earnings.
“Meregali has been a prodigious talent since his early days as a blue belt, a skilled and technical protege of Mário (Reis). His commitment was evident when he essentially lived at the gym. His self-assurance, a trait I believe is vital for a champion, has always been prominent. He’s never been overly concerned about his rivals, which is an advantageous mindset,” Gurgel commented.
He added, “Recently, he’s adopted a persona, a move I perceive as a savvy commercial tactic. It’s reminiscent of Gordon Ryan’s approach in the U.S. Perhaps influenced by their joint training sessions, Meregali has effectively emulated and now excels in this role. While it’s not an approach I personally advocate, I can’t deny its effectiveness. He’s crafted an image that draws attention, prompting audiences to pay to possibly witness his defeat. It’s a clear and successful commercial strategy, leveraging his Jiu-Jitsu prowess for financial gain.”
Nicholas Meregali, formerly with the Alliance team and now 29 years old, boasts an undefeated streak across 15 fights in both Grappling and Jiu-Jitsu. His last setback occurred at the 2022 ADCC, where Yuri Simões defeated him in the absolute final. Meregali’s most recent victory came at UFC Invitational 6 in March, where he vanquished fellow Brazilian and 2019 ADCC champion, Matheus Diniz, via a rear-naked choke. He is set to return to the mats against Vagner Rocha in the headline bout of WNO 23 on May 10th, under Grappling rules. The event is scheduled in Texas, USA.
