Mark Zuckerberg’s Advice to Jiu-Jitsu Beginners

Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg is known to be an avid practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Zuckerberg began training in the martial art around a few years ago and has continued training regularly ever since and even competed last month.

In terms of style, Zuckerberg favors more of a no-gi approach to Jiu-Jitsu, focusing on techniques that can be applied without the use of a traditional uniform or gi. This no-gi style is sometimes referred to as submission grappling and emphasizes techniques like chokes and joint locks. Zuckerberg trains under Guerilla Jiu-Jitsu head instructor Dave Camarillo.

When asked about which advice would he give to beginners in BJJ on Lex Fridman’s podcast, Zuckerberg mentioned that you should keep your ego in check.

“You get beaten up a lot in BJJ.”

“You can’t push through everything. When you compare BJJ with the challenges of running a company, is that you get feedback very quickly if something works or doesn’t work.”

Jiu jitsu is an incredibly rewarding martial art, but it can be intimidating for beginners.

Jiu jitsu is meant to be enjoyable. The physical and mental challenges can be very rewarding. So keep a positive attitude, work hard, and have fun training with your teammates. The rest will take care of itself over time.
