Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is far from being as serious and strict as other forms of martial arts. The main reason is probably due to the fact of it being a martial art/sport that has mostly been developed in Brazil. It would be unavoidable for it not to be influenced by the personality and laid back way of living of the Brazilian people. This also translates to the way BJJ belts are graded. Surely there are very positive and also not so positive points that come with it and this is what helped to form the way our beloved sport goes nowadays.

Malachy Friedman, BJJ instructor at American Top Team Lowcountry , decided to go to the home of his student to leave his new purple belt on the front porch.
Before the pandemic broke out, Friedman already wanted to promote his student. Since he didn’t manage to give him the purple belt in person, he chose another way. Knowing that the student does not waste time sitting at home and still trains BJJ, he did not wait for the academy door to open to promote him. So he left the belt and there was an unforgettable moment in a safe distance.

This is a crazy period of times. Billy deserved his promotion a couple weeks ago. I had the belt ready then boom; no more contact. No more gatherings. I was unsure how long I was going to go without seeing him. So without calling without a heads up I decided I will take this upon myself to number 1 suprise him and number 2 put my mark on someone who has been with me for so long and has paid the dues on the mats to get there.”
