Gordon Ryan made his name on the scene by first winning EBI 6 then scorching through every possible opponent on social media. He wanted the baddest, best he could find in nogi all so he could triumph at the ADCC – which he then did winning a Gold and Silver medals.
However you might think he’s about to jump into the gi thing with both feet but he’s actually crafted a moderate step by step roll out. Here’s how he put it:
People have been asking me about gi training.
You have to understand that i trained in the gi for a few years and even competed in the gi up until early black belt. But I never had any “gi training” meaning I basically just wore the gi and did no gi minus a bow and arrow strangle. I’ve now been grip training in the gi since January.
Things take time and I don’t expect to go out and submit top level guys right away as everyone expects me to. I expect to progress from local shows, to world class guys, to world beaters over the time span of 2-3 years just like i did without the gi. My plan is to get comfortable competing the last half of this year and then attack some higher level guys next year. Remember, I’m a hard and intelligent worker, not a magician who lives in the hyperbolic time chamber.
Earlier this year Ryan signed with Berkut and everyone jumped to conclusion he’ll be going straight at the title shots:
He’ll be facing Vinny Magalhaes next at ACB 13
