Grip Fighting Basics – Controlling The Inside Lapel Correctly

by Matt D’Aquino, a multiple Australian and Oceania Champion and a 2008 Beijing Judo Olympian. He has been studying Judo for over 23 years. He is a 3rd Degree Black belt and a purple belt in BJJ.  . Matt has also come out with a great new DVD set for BJJ players: Judo for BJJ.

In this video, Matt goes over Left vs. Right Gripping, and shows how to control the favoured inside lapel grip that is great for setting up various attacks such as Seoi Nage, Kosoto Gake, Kouchi Gari etc..:

  1. Basic Concepts
    1. Inside control – set lapel hand, and then reach for the sleeve.
    2. If power gripping, pull opponent in (not keeping them at an arm’sdistance).
    3. Note: Keep your head on the outside of their body.
