Changing your nutrition is not a simple thing. Sure, you want to eat better, but the diet you’re currently on… It’s tasty. It’s addictive. And neither you nor your body want to give it up so easily.
So, if you want to improve your diet, it’s incredibly important to take it slow. Demian Maia shares why and how he did it himself.
CHANGE YOUR NUTRITION: DEMIAM MAIA SHARES HOW
The first thing that Maia did and that changed his nutrition was a simple question. A question, that he asks himself up until this day, every time before a meal: “Are you eating because you’re anxious? Or because you’re hungry… Or you want to eat that just because you like it?”
Maia shares the impact of this question:
Just by asking this question, everything started to change. Because this question gives me awareness… And [because of it], many times I don’t eat when I ask myself this question.
Secondly, Maia says that you need to understand the force that habits play in your behavior. He shares a quote: “People underestimate what they can do in a long period of time and they overestimate what they can do in a short period of time.”
With this in mind, BJJ athletes need to realize that changing their nutrition will need time – as their diet is a habit in and of itself. You can’t change an eating habit that you’ve had for over 20 years…
So don’t try to change everything immediately; rather, make small steps that you can execute almost easily. It will all add up with time.
