On August 9, in Los Angeles, California, Andre Galvao will face Chael Sonnen at Metamoris 4.
André Galvão , BJJ world champion and gold medal at ADCC, will face Chael Sonnen , one of the most controversial athletes in UFC history, in a 20 minutes long no gi grappling fight. Submission only, no points.
Saying that Galvao is the favorite is an understatement. A multiple time world Jiu-Jitsu champion, the Brazilian will face an opponent with little Jiu-Jitsu experience. Chael Sonnen comes from a solid wrestling background and has just submitted five opponents in his 16 year MMA career.
Galvao told Tatame:
” Ralek Gracie (organizer) got in touch asking if I would like to fight, and I said yes. Until then, I did not know who he would put me up against. After a few weeks, he said it would be against Sonnen. I found it very cool and I accepted, ”
“I perfectly understand that people have placed me as a favorite. I do only Jiu-Jitsu and do just that for years. But the rule is somewhat different and, moreover, Chael is a renowned wrestler, and he knows No Gi Jiu-Jitsu. he is stronger and heavier. Regardless, I think it will be a great fight. Will be a major challenge, both for me and for him. As always, I’ll be ready. I’ll do what I like. I have fun fighting, “he said.
Sonnen can attract a different type of audience to watch the fight. At least that is what Galvao believes:
“MMA has grown a lot in Brazil. People know who the fighters in the UFC are today. Many knowledgeable about Sonnen. He fought for the UFC belt against Anderson Silva and also attended the TUF with Wanderlei Silva. These things made him very well known in Brazil and believe that people will wonder how will this fight go, “he concluded.
