Three-Peat Champion Buchecha On Roger Gracie’s Return: ‘It Will Be Interesting”

Marcus Buchecha made history last Sunday taking the absolute final of the World Jiu-Jitsu Championships for the third time in a row.

The Checkmat athlete surpassed his nemesis Rodolfo Vieira once again. With this feat,  he equals Roger Gracie, as the greatest champion in the history of Jiu-Jitsu, who also holds three absolute world titles.

On social medias, Buchecha spoke of the pressure that he experienced and explained the strategy that he has developed with his team to stop the dangerous fighter from GFTeam.

The triple absolute champion, now is thinking of a well-earned rest, as he has been training since January for the World Pro and Worlds. He also talked about how tiring his training routine is:

“Today I have no words to describe this moment, since yesterday after the tournament I’ve seen a movie of my career since the beginning until now, thank God one more dream came true and I became 3X Open Weight and Ultra Heavy Champion, I still didn’t realize what I’ve done but one thing I can say, it’s impossible to describe this feeling with words, foe sure was the most amazing moment of my life, and all the training, the sweet dropped on the mat, the pains and the will is being paid off.

This week was hard for me because everyone was asking me about making history with a three-peat. I don’t like to put pressure on myself, so it was difficult. I was pushing myself, but my mind was good, and I came prepared. The job was well done. My strategy was to not let him control, and it was exactly what I did. I exchanged standing with him, something that is not my style. I almost got some takedowns, but the guy defends well, and is very strong. I was able to work on top, block his sweeps. Wrestling workouts paid off. Now it’s time to celebrate.

I do not know how much longer I can take this, but this feeling I’m feeling right now makes me want to feel this all year. It is a feeling that no money can buy. Who has been there knows what is. Sure, I want to feel it in my life again, .”

In an interview with tatame, Buchecha commented the possible return of the legend Roger Gracie to the mats (scheduled to return next year to Jiu-Jitsu competitions):

“If Roger comes back, it will be interesting, but it will be one more competitor in the division out of so many other tough guys. There is no guarantee that we will face each other, I might lose before, or he loses. It could be his day, my, Rodolfo, Bernardo … But it would be interesting to have him back. It would be cool. “

The two of course have already met back in Metamoris in 2012. The result was a draw although may feel that Buchecha dominated as he had two very close submissions locked in. Roger had come back back from a staff infection and hadn’t been competing in Jiu-Jitsu for 2 years back then.
