A BJJ black belt under Carlson Gracie , Paulo Filho was once considered the world’s number one fighter at middle weight after reaching the final of the Pride Grand Prix and winning the belt of the defunct WEC. But personal problems, such as the death of his father, and addiction to prescription drugs had started to affect her career, which culminated in his resignation from the WEC and lackluster performances in Brazilian events.

After several attempts to return to fight at a high level, alternating performances between medium and medium heavy weight, Paulo decided to take a break from the ring, but promises to return in 2014 focused to do some more fights. For this, the athlete, who is living in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro is back at Brazilian Top Team, the team that he defended for years while fighting for Pride. He told Tatame:

“Actually, I never left. But I lived in Niterói and it was very tiring cross the bridge every day to train at Lagoa (BTT headquarters), “

said the fighter, who reunited in training with Leo Leite, old friend and rival of his time in Judo:

“I really enjoyed the workout. They have some very good young kids in training. And it was great to reconnect with Leo Leite. He is a spectacular guy, an example! I admire him greatly. He was a great opponent in Judo. I faced him more than 20 times and it always was a war. My finals were always against him or against Angelo Paiva (commentator on SporTV). Leo has great cardio is very strong and I’m sure that will have a good future in MMA. He goes for it, and is not afraid of taking punch in the face. He also hits well.”

Return to the ring at welterweight

In addition to resuming training at BTT, Paulo revealed that he intends to fight at welterweight (77kg) the lightest ever weight in his MMA career.

“I’m 84kg now. I’m sure that if I go into a sauna now, I hit 77kg. I’m feeling good. After seven years now, I can finally say that I’m in shape. “

The return of the black belt to the ring will take place in January 2014 at Bitetti Combat.

“In Bitetti I’ll fight at 84kg, but it might surprise some paint and I fight to 77kg. Then there are two international events wanting me to fight in February. I will see dates and to see which one will fight. ”
