Murilo Bustamante Fan of the Modern Game: ‘The Lapel Game & The Berimbolo Are Admirable’

The leader of Brazilian Top Team, BJJ legend Murilo Bustamante has been critical in the past about online belt promotions . He showed his opposition to Internet Jiu-Jitsu belt promotions (such as Gracie University) , but acknowledged that it is difficult to control the spread of this new mode of teaching Jiu-Jitsu:

“To study BJJ on the internet is one thing, but practice it is another. It’s not like math class, history … It’s very different. It is up to the market as a whole, look at who’s who: the black belt from a real teacher and the black belt of the internet. I am against this, it’s obvious, but how to prevent a teacher to give an online course? It’s sad, but difficult to control, “

Altough he is against online belt promotions, the former UFC champion athlete says that he enjoys watching modern Jiu-Jitsu:

“These last few years Buchecha dominated, with the absence of Roger Gracie . I really like to see Roger fight because he fights one way very well, very traditional. His style is easier to apply in MMA. The kids always have new sweeps, new half guard. They are always creating something different. I like also to watch the Mendes brothers Rodolfo Vieira.”

Murilo Bustamante recently told Brazil’s Tatame magazine about his views on the current evolution of Jiu-Jitsu:

“I do not think that Jiu-Jitsu has lost the essence. There are very functional positions that have been developed in Jiu-Jitsu. The lapel game, I’ve seen a lot now, is admirable. There are people who attack a lot with this game. There’s even some berimbolo positions the guy does well to take the back of the opponent. Every position created with the objective of submitting or go to a better position, is valid.

He is not a fan of the 50-50 position:

“The position I have a problem with is the 50-50. The fight remains a long time there. It is not applicable in the functionality of Jiu-Jitsu, which is self-defense. There should should be a certain time limit for  athletes to be there. A punishment. I’ve seen fights that went 10 minutes and nothing happened. It is a like an endless seesaw. One wins a point, the other gains an advantage … We have to find a way to undo the position when it is in 50-50 for too long. Bring the fight standing, or give a punishment. Jiu-Jitsu’s goal is to submit. These positions do too much damage to the art. Even worse they make it boring to watch “
