The biggest upset at the Worlds 2016 was triumph of Erberth Santos over Bernardo Faria via armbar in the semifinals of black belt Absolute. Erberth Santos attempted to pull an armbar over Faria injuring Faria’s pec. Faria is expected to be out for up to three months as a result of this injury. Santos was on another level through most of this competition and his takedown counter game is at an all time high level.
Santos also managed to rip through Romulo Barral in the quarter finals before facing Faria. Erberth Santos is set to fight Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida in the finals. Buchecha pulled off victories against both Pedro Moura and Felipe “Preguiça” Pena.
Leandro Lo was in Buchecha’s part of the bracket but he opted out of the semi finals, possibly due to an injury. He eliminated Cornelius, Gustavo Elias and Ricardo Rezende.
The brown belt division also featured much excitement. Nicholas Meregali affirmed his poisiton as the best brown belt out there by winning double gold. He even managed to tapp out Max Gimenis (GF Team) in the semi finals via triangle. He faced an Alliance teammate Isaque Bahiense in the final.

More great matches are up ahead. Female division also has some exciting matches coming. The real question is how will Mackenzie Dern let her MMA transition affect her performance at Worlds. This is especially interesting when we consider that this is also Nicolini’s last world championship in the adult division. Dern already advanced to the finals winning over Karen Antunes by unanimous decision. Nicolini will be facing Dern later today in the featherweight black belt finals.
Rafa Mendes also started his journey at the 2016 Worlds as we speak. He has great chances of wining his 6th World Title.
