Fila Grappling Worlds 2012, Full Review, Results & Pictures

The FILA World Championship of grappling, pankration and amateur mixed martial arts were held in Skala (Cracow) from 15 to 18 November 2012. the Polish Federation is to thank and in particular Mr. Grzegorz Brudzinski and Mr. Marcin Dudek for accepting this challenge due to the cancellation of the regularly scheduled Championship in Moscow. Despite the short time available, the organizing committee has done an exemplary job and managed to create a friendly atmosphere and fellowship that characterizes the FILA competition. The five continents were represented with a total of 23 participating countries, including, for the first time in World Championship, Australia, American Samoa and Luxembourg. 4 countries have distinguished themselves by winning first place team, namely Ukraine in pankration, Russia in Amateur MMA, and Poland in Grappling (Gi and No-Gi).

The No-Gi grappling competition was marked by the participation and success of UFC Vet Jeff Monson (USA, 100 kg) two days after beating Alexander Emelianenko by submission in M-1 held in St Petersburg. Jeff Monson won his third title of World Champion FILA and achieves a outstanding performance at 41 years of age. The Swedish team has also made a comeback with three gold medals in men (Amir Al Bazy in 62kg, Mats Nilsson in 92kg, and Michael Knutsson in 100kg) and one title in the women in Sofia Hedqvist at 71kg. Note the superb performance of Penny Thomas (South Africa, 64kg) who offered the only gold medal of the championship to the African continent. Poland also honored the audience with two gold medals in men (Piotr Podstawczuk in 66kg and 71kg with Maciej Polok) and a title in the womens, with Maria Malyjasiak at 71 kg.

The last day was dedicated to the Gi grappling competition which was been marked by several doubles, including Amir Al Bazy (SWE 62kg) Piotr Podstawczuk (POL, 66kg), Maciej Polok (POL, 71kg) Oceane Talvard (FRA, 53kg), Maria Shkvarunets (RUS, 58kg), Penny Thomas (RSA, 64kg) and Maria Malyjasiak (POL, 71 kg). Also note the performance Ermis Dimitropoulos (77kg) who offered to Greece’s it’s second Championship title and Goran Vidakovic (CRO 92kg) who beat the favorite of the group, Piotr Baginski, also Polish coach and best athlete of the year 2011. Uros Culic From Serbia repeated his excellent performance from the European Championship (Gold) and took first place at 100kgs.
