Shocking details emerged about a violent altercation that took place in January 2022 between former UFC and Bellator star Yoel Romero and then-bare-knuckle champion Alberto Blas.
The incident, which had remained largely under wraps for over two years, occurred in the parking lot of the American Top Team gym in Florida.
According to reports, Blas attempted to strike Romero with his vehicle before attacking him with what was described as a samurai sword or similar bladed weapon.
Romero reportedly sustained injuries to his hand and arm, including a torn tendon that required medical treatment.
Despite the seriousness of the attack, Romero did not press charges or cooperate with authorities during the ensuing legal process.
Blas, who held the BKFC bantamweight title at the time, was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder and misdemeanor battery.
The case went to trial in December 2024, but due to Romero’s refusal to testify, the jury acquitted Blas.
Without the victim’s cooperation, prosecutors lacked key testimony that might have secured a conviction.
Following the incident and other reported conduct issues, Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship severed ties with Blas.
After his acquittal, Blas signed with another bare-knuckle promotion and resumed his career.
Romero, a Cuban Olympic silver medalist and one of the most explosive athletes in MMA history, has remained silent on the matter publicly.
Having recovered from his injuries, he quietly returned to competition and chose to let the case fade into the background – until it was brought to public attention by sports media this year.
