Fighting in enemy territory, Myktybek Orolbai delivered a statement performance at UFC Baku – by submitting hometown favorite Tofiq Musayev with a tight Kimura in the very first round.
Despite Musayev receiving a thunderous welcome from the crowd, the cheers were short-lived.
Orolbai wasted no time bringing the fight to the mat, scoring an early takedown and establishing control.
He repeatedly returned the Azerbaijani fighter to the canvas, staying patient until an opportunity presented itself.
And when it did, Orolbai acted decisively – securing a Kimura from top position and applying brutal torque to the shoulder.
Musayev grimaced in pain before being forced to tap to avoid serious damage.
The submission was sealed at 4:35 of round one.
Orolbai said the following about the short nature of the bout:
That was a surprise.
We knew he was a great fighter, so this was a little bit of a surprise.
With the win, Orolbai rebounds from his first UFC loss – against Mateusz Rebecki – and improves his record to 14-2-1 overall, including 3-1 in the UFC.
