Colby Covington made quick work of Luke Rockhold in the main event of RAF 5 in Florida, needing less than two periods to secure a dominant technical fall victory.
The former Oregon State All-American immediately established control with his wrestling, repeatedly reversing Rockhold, throwing him around the mat, and piling up points at a rapid pace.
Although Rockhold fought hard to stay in the contest, Covington’s pressure and offense proved overwhelming.
The bout came to an end when Covington hit a final four-point sequence to build a 12–0 lead, forcing a technical fall.
Despite the lopsided result, Covington was respectful of Rockhold’s willingness to step onto the wrestling mat:
He felt very strong. He was a big guy.
I have a lot of respect for that guy.He was a very worthy opponent and I’m honored to share the mat with Luke Rockhold.
Covington wasted no time asserting himself, scoring two quick points and immediately attempting to secure a pin.
Although he was unable to finish, he stayed on the attack and added another two points to surge ahead 4–0 early in the opening period.
He later shot in on a slick ankle pick, forcing Rockhold to defend hard before the referee called a stalemate.
Moments after the restart, Covington again penetrated deep on a takedown and converted for two more points as the first period closed.
Rockhold opened the second period with his first shot of the match, but Covington responded instantly with a go-behind to add another two points.
The final sequence came when Covington locked up a front headlock, threw Rockhold to the mat, and rolled through for a four-point move to stretch the lead to 12–0 and end the contest.
Covington immediately set his sights on a legendary target, calling out the only welterweight in UFC history with more takedowns than him:
You know who I want next? There’s only one person above me on the takedown list in UFC welterweight history and that’s Georges St-Pierre.
GSP, get out here in Real American Freestyle, and let’s make it happen.
I’ll talk to my people and they’ll come to your people and let’s make it happen. Everybody wants to see you, GSP.
