Charles Johnson pulled off a rare Scottish twister submission to finish Eduardo Chapolin at UFC 330 on Saturday.
Chapolin, who stepped in on short notice after originally being scheduled against Jose Ochoa, came close to pulling off an upset early – landing a hard shot that dropped Johnson in the second round.
Johnson showed his usual resilience, recovering between rounds and coming out sharper in the third, where he began landing heavy punishment before a scramble briefly gave him Chapolin’s back.
When Chapolin attempted to turn out of the position, Johnson capitalized immediately, locking in the Scottish tTwister for the tap just seconds later.
The finish came at 1:36 of the third round.
Johnson said of the finish:
That’s my s*it. I’ve been training diligently. We worked our ass off.
I kind of made him feel he could turn in and I had it.
The win adds to Johnson’s growing reputation as one of the roster’s more unpredictable finishers, with previous highlight-reel wins including a knockout of current UFC flyweight champion Joshua Van and a finish over top-10 contender Lone’er Kavanagh.
